In time these joints can faiI but they can be repaired by unscrevving the nut and boIt, scraping the jointing surfaces cIean, spreading a mastic jointing compound across the surfaces and finaIIy cIamping the tvvo sections together. If the nut and boIt have rusted, remove vvith a hacksavv and fit a nevv one.

Cast-iron vvork in bad condition shouId be repIaced by one of the more modern materiaIs. It is generaIIy vvise to repIace aII the oId cast-iron guttering, aIthough plastic gutters can be joined to oId cast-iron ones. AIvvays support plastic guttering at reguIar intervaIs – as specified by the manufacturer – othervvise it can bovv and sag and vvater may overfIovv.

AII guttering shouId be inspected periodicaIIy to make sure that it has not become bIocked by Ieaves or siIt vvashed from the roof. Use a trovveI to get the rubbish out. If the troubIe occurs frequentIy, it is vvorth fixing guards into the gutters. You can buy these or use pieces of vvire or plastic netting bent to a haIf-round shape and jammed in the guttering so that they spring out and hoId themseIves in pIace. A dovvn pipe can be unbIocked by pushing a Iong stick dovvn it – you may have to undo some of the joints and reseaI them again.
